At home, there was a different current flowing through the house now, one that each of them was struggling to fit into their formerly routine routine. Mo stood in her studio, cleaning brushes and didn’t hear Beth’s approach.

As she watched her partner work with her tools, comfortable in her environment, Beth smiled. The smile faded a bit when she realized that Mo was losing weight. Always in good shape, her frame seemed a little smaller and her cheekbones had become pronounced but not in a good, Angelina way—more like a stress diet way. Mo sensed Beth’s presence and looked up.

“Hey.”

“Hey.” Beth picked up a tube of acrylic from Mo’s workspace and read it, more to combat the awkwardness than out of any true interest in her current palette choices. “Muddled basil.” She squinted at the small print. “Muddled basil?”

Mo laughed. “I know. Can you imagine what a cool job it would be to be in charge of naming all of these colors?”

Beth thought that job sounded awful but simply nodded.

As she wiped a brush that was already clean, Mo asked the question that hung between them. “Anyone yet?”

“No,” Beth responded, feeling a little guilty. Technically, yes, there was someone. But they weren’t sleeping together. Yet. Always a lawyer, it was all in the details for Beth.

Mo nodded, still not looking up.

“When it does happen, if I mean,” Beth ventured. “How much do you want to know?”

It took a long time for the answer and when it came, it wasn’t an answer at all. “I don’t know. Everything. Nothing. I really don’t know.” Mo finished fiddling with her materials and finally looked up. “Want to help me with dinner?”

Both knew they were avoiding the biggest thing going on in their lives. And both were relieved.

“Sure,” Beth said with a smile. “Let’s go.”
